The Connected Intelligence Unit is part of RISE Computer Science in Kista. The current research focus is on the Internet of Things. Among the group's key technologies are the Contiki operating system, uIP stack, ContikiRPL, SICSLoWPAN, and lightweight implementation of IPsec and DTLS. The unit conducts projects together with industry and academic partners from Sweden and across the world.
The task of this MSc thesis is to make automowers smarter. In our lab, we have a real Husqvarna automower that has been equipped with additional hardware including cameras. While current automowers only drive in an area that needs to be defined with a wire laid on the ground, the goal of this thesis is to make the automower smart enough to understand the boundaries of the lawn it is cutting. In addition, it should also be able to recognize and handle objects, such as animals and toys, on the grass.

Who are you?
We expect you to have good programming skills in Python and (embedded) C. A strong interest in machine learning, in particular vision, is also a prerequisite. Hardware skills are also a plus. The automower software is developed in ROS (the Robot Operating System) – so practical experience of the ROS environment is also a plus.
